Right, let's talk about Shuttleworth Collection in Old Warden. If you're looking for a wedding venue that's genuinely different, this is it. Vintage aircraft, Swiss Garden next door, and a setting that nobody else will have.

Why It Works for Photography

The aircraft hangar backdrop is bonkers in the best way. Where else are you taking couple portraits next to a 1940s Spitfire? The contrast between wedding elegance and industrial aviation creates images that are striking and unique. The Swiss Garden (included in your hire) gives you formal landscaping, water features, and woodland paths - completely different aesthetic, same location.

The light inside the hangars can be tricky. It's vast, echoey space with limited natural light, so your photographer will need to know what they're doing with flash and positioning. Outside, though, it's glorious - open fields, dramatic skies, those incredible aircraft.

The Reality Check

Shuttleworth is another dry hire venue. You're bringing in everything except the toilets. The space is flexible - you can have your ceremony in the hangar, the Swiss Garden, or outside on the grass. Reception in the hangar works surprisingly well with the right styling (think industrial-chic, Edison bulbs, long tables).

The venue's about 15 minutes from Bedford town centre. Parking is plentiful - it's an airfield, after all. Nearest station is Bedford (8 miles), so you'll need to arrange transport. From London, it's 90 minutes by car. Luton Airport is 30 minutes away, making it accessible for destination wedding guests.

What It Costs

Mid-range venue hire, but like Wrest Park (check my other blog on Wrest Park), your total spend depends entirely on what you bring in. The uniqueness means you can style it simply and it'll still look incredible. Budget £7,000-10,000 all in if you're sensible, more if you're going elaborate.

The Vibe

This isn't for everyone. If you want classic elegance, look elsewhere. But if you want guests talking about your wedding for years because "they got married in an aircraft hangar," Shuttleworth delivers. It's quirky without being gimmicky.
